A Blessed Samhain and New Year To All

Autumn_fairy_by_Ironshod

Halloween

by Arthur Peterson
Out I went into the meadow,
Where the moon was shining brightly,
And the oak-tree's lengthening shadows
On the sloping sward did lean;
For I longed to see the goblins,
And the dainty-footed fairies,
And the gnomes, who dwell in caverns,
But come forth on Halloween.

"All the spirits, good and evil,
Fay and pixie, witch and wizard,
On this night will sure be stirring,"
Thought I, as I walked along;
"And if Puck, the merry wanderer,
Or her majesty, Titania,
Or that Mab who teases housewives
If their housewifery be wrong,

Should but condescend to meet me"—
But my thoughts took sudden parting,
For I saw, a few feet from me,
Standing in the moonlight there,
A quaint, roguish little figure,
And I knew 'twas Puck, the trickster,
By the twinkle of his bright eyes
Underneath his shaggy hair.

Yet I felt no fear of Robin,
Salutation brief he uttered,
Laughed and touched me on the shoulder,
And we lightly walked away;
And I found that I was smaller,
For the grasses brushed my elbows,
And the asters seemed like oak-trees,
With their trunks so tall and gray.

Swiftly as the wind we traveled,
Till we came unto a garden,
Bright within a gloomy forest,
Like a gem within the mine;
And I saw, as we grew nearer,
That the flowers so blue and golden
Were but little men and women,
Who amongst the green did shine.

But 'twas marvelous the resemblance
Their bright figures bore to blossoms,
As they smiled, and danced, and courtesied,
Clad in yellow, pink and blue;
That fair dame, my eyes were certain,
Who among them moved so proudly,
Was my moss-rose, while her ear-rings
Sparkled like the morning dew.

Here, too, danced my pinks and pansies,
Smiling, gayly, as they used to
When, like beaux bedecked and merry,
They disported in the sun;
There, with meek eyes, walked a lily,
While the violets and snow-drops
Tripped it with the lordly tulips:
Truant blossoms, every one.

Then spoke Robin to me, wondering:
"These blithe fairies are the spirits
Of the flowers which all the summer
Bloom beneath its tender sky;
When they feel the frosty fingers
Of the autumn closing round them,
They forsake their earthborn dwellings,
Which to earth return and die,

"As befits things which are mortal.
But these spirits, who are deathless,
Care not for the frosty autumn,
Nor the winter long and keen;
But, from field, and wood, and garden,
When their summer's tasks are finished,
Gather here for dance and music,
As of old, on Halloween."

Long, with Puck, I watched the revels,
Till the gray light of the morning
Dimmed the luster of Orion,
Starry sentry overhead;
And the fairies, at that warning,
Ceased their riot, and the brightness
Faded from the lonely forest,
And I knew that they had fled.

Ah, it ne'er can be forgotten,
This strange night I learned the secret—
That within each flower a busy
Fairy lives and works unseen
Seldom is 't to mortals granted
To behold the elves and pixies,
To behold the merry spirits,
Who come forth on Halloween.

The Full Hunter’s Moon

The temperatures have cooled somewhat so the other day I decided to put the flannel sheets on the bed.  It is always nice to crawl into a soft warm bed rather than a crisp cool one this time of year.  It helps to make a nights sleep just a little bit more pleasant.  Of course though eventually one has to crawl out of this warm cozy place.
December 2010
 Winston insisted last night that I do this a bit earlier than I normally   would, lets say about 3 am in the morning.  He was determined to go outside and do his business.  I grumbled as I crawled out of my warm fuzzy place, slipped on a sweater and went to the back door to let him run a bit.

As I opened the back door I was greeted with a very pleasant surprise.  I knew the moon was full last night, I watched her as she rose in the east.  Yet I was reminded again of how she has a wonderful way of lighting the nighttime.  This time of year she seems to be especially bright and clear.  I stood on the back porch for a bit admiring her beauty despite the cold temperatures.  I could see the ducks as they glided across the pond lit by her.  Winston ran around in his carefree manner like he was a bit unaware that it was still so early.  Or maybe he just wanted me to come out and see just how beautiful the moon was last night.

Crow_Moon_webThis month’s full moon is referred to as the Hunter’s Moon.  Due to the harvest that has taken place in the weeks prior.  The fields do not have as many places for the wildlife to hide, therefore the hunter’s are keen in seeing their whereabouts.  It is also call, thus because it is a time where the days shorten and the temperatures fall, meaning winter is close at hand.  It is a time to start thinking of storing for the winter months ahead.  Samhain is just days away and then the new year.  It is a time of new beginnings and a time to prepare for the long months of winter when reflection and slower times come.  May each of you enjoy the coming days with joy and many blessings.

Samhain Exchange and The Winner of My Giveaway

There is nothing more fun than getting a package in the mail.  It is even more exciting when it is a surprise.  Recently I participated in a Samhain exchange sponsored by a dear person many of you know Faerwillow over at Serendipity .  She is always coming up with new ways to have fun.  I received my package last week from Stacey over at Do What You Love and not opening it until October 31st was a hard one.  Yet it was well worth the wait.
It was filled with all sorts of goodies and the majority of it was all hand crafted.  I love simplicity and how it can be used to create some of the most wonderful things.  This box was a good example of just that

A perfect example were these little floating acorn candles.
A beautiful necklace to reflect the season.

The box was sprinkled with several of these hand sewn acorns in a variety of fall colors.

If you would like to participate in Faerwillows latest exchange, head on over to her site.  But hurry because sign up ends November 3rd.
And now to announce the winner of my giveaway.
First let me say thank you to all of you who participated. I was overwhelmed at the number of entries.  As many of you may know I like to write each name down and draw the winner... This time took me a while.
And the winner is....
Congrats to you.  Email me your shipping info and I will have the package in the post.

The Legend of the Jack - O - Lantern

The custom of the jack-o-lantern came from Ireland and was first made out of holloed out turnips and beets. It was the immigrants to eventually ventured to America that later used the pumpkin and squash. According to the legend, the Jack-O-Lantern derived its name from a man named Jack. He was a mischievous lad who escaped the devil’s attempts to steal his soul on many an occasion. When Jack died, it was said that he could not get into heaven because of his naughty ways. He then went to the gates of hell, and the devil also refused him entrance.

The devil then tossed a piece of coal out to Jack as a jokingly way of offering him a means to find his way in the dark. Yet Jack was not that dumb. He placed the piece of coal into a carved out turnip creating a makeshift lantern which provided him light enough as he wandered about purgatory.

The placing of a light in the hollowed out pumpkins and squash today is a means to ward off the dark or any unwanted spirits. The pumpkin is to be placed at the front door or in any passageway in need of protection or light.

If you would like an extra entry for my Samhain giveaway. Go to the link and post a comment with the word Jack-o-lantern.

Look What I Won

I love this time of year with all the giveaways and there have been some wonderful ones.  I have been lucky to win a few.  My latest one was from The Halloween Queens and their wonderful 31 day giveaway of handmade crafts.  I will admit that I have had my eye on this one and was wishing I would be lucky enough to be one of the winners.

Lo and behold, Friday I did just that.  I won this adorable Halloween Orny from Pearl Avenue Studios.
Needless to say I was overjoyed.  If you were lucky enough to get your name in the hopper there are still a few days left to be chosen.  Best of all, on the 31st they are picking a grand prize winner... whopee.

Halloween Greetings to You All

First off let me start off with welcoming you to my little corner of blogland.  I hope you enjoy yourself as you take a look around.  As you probably already know I  decided to participate in Mrs. B's Haunted Blog Tour this year.  Her continuing efforts to bring goulish fun and excitement to our Octobers each year is something we all look forward to.

This time of year has always been a favorite time of mine for so many reasons.  From the carving of Jack-O-Lanterns to eating carmel apples to the wonderful vibrant colors that Mother Nature gives it is a wonderful time indeed.

It is also a time when we prepare for the final harvest and the coming of the new year.  The year is winding down and we reflect on what has past and what is to come.  As All Hallows Eve nears, we all have our own form of celebration.  Mine is usually a quiet night at home with a meal representive of the fruits of the harvest at this time of year.  I usually take any last herbs and/or flowers that I may want before the end of the day and always pay homage to those who have passed, remembering them and the gifts they gave and still give to us.

This is a time when the veil is quite thin between worlds and is a perfect time to communicate with those who have gone before.  I am always sure to leave an offering beneath my Elm for the fae as well as a couple colorful trinkets.

I wish you and yours a blessed Samhain and hope that your time together will be joyful and warm.

I thought I would point you to a few posts of mine with Autumn and Samhain in mind.  A little of everything.  Enjoy...  Don't forget to check out my giveaway to celebrate this time of year.

Early Sunday Mornings - Autumn in the Air

Fall  is most definitely in the air.  Finally mornings where I can actually enjoy my morning coffee once more on the back porch as the sun comes over the  horizon.  Early morning temperatures in the 50's with just that touch of coldness that the hot coffee seems to divert so nicely.  I love it.  I keep telling everyone that fall is going to be early this year and they look at me as if I am crazy.

Yet I am holding to my prediction.  I see far too many signs to not think so.  The birds are gathering much sooner than usual as well as the neighborhood squirrels.  Even the trees seem to be showing me signs that the heat of summer is taking an early exit.  I am eager for the cooler times... the slower times... the times that I can putter around in my kitchen cooking all sorts of goodies and what not.  I love the smells of a busy kitchen.  You all know what I am talking about... It brings back memories of grandma houses, family gatherings and so on.  It seems that a busy kitchen can always make one smile.

Believe it or not I am already busily working on my Christmas/Yule gifts and it looks to be another year where I will be done early with plenty of time to relax and enjoy the season properly... in the kitchen of course.  I love when that happens as it gives one the chance to really enjoy the festive time as it should be enjoyed; without stress and in a relaxed manner.

Yet even before Yule there is Halloween and Thanksgiving.  Another good excuse to be in the kitchen or busy working around the house.  I am of course looking forward to Mrs. B's 30 days of Halloween as I am sure many others of you are.  There is the Practical Magic Party on September 25th and the all the other goodies that come up between now and then.  This always seems to be an active time in blog land or at least with all the ones that I seem to be connected with.  So much going on.. so many great ideas to be found... and so many wonderful things to just be a part of.

And to think it is all just beginning.... enjoy

PS:  Don't forget about the wonderful giveaways over at Ewitch - Winners will be chosen this next week.

Happy Samhain - And The Winner is........

First off I would like to wish all of you a wonderful All Hallows Eve... It is an absolutely beautiful day here... I have been busy with all sorts of things.... I had to go outside and enjoy the sunshine as well as the warm temperatures.. It is Halloween and I saw wasps, butterflys and ladybugs... wonderful...... My back porch was covered in willow leaves from the days before when the wind blew like winter... of course I had to sweep them off....
I prepared my apples for the cemetary.  I am some distance from any of my relatives to visit them so I decided to go out and give the Wright babies (Jackie Moon story) each a little something this Hallow Eve.  A nice little apple with a marigold tied with a red ribbon.  I don't get many (if any) trick or treaters so I figured I would do this instead.

I am also busy preparing the food and such for this evening... Roasted corn, acorn squash, Halloween Pie (sheep herders pie with charmed potatoes), and fairy cakes with homemade whip cream... It just all sounds so yummy... I can't wait to eat it....

Also finally got around to carving 2 of my pumpkins... The 2 tall ones from Tennessee.  Also planning on making some roasted pumpkin seeds .  I still don't think I will be able to bring myself to cut the others.... they are just too nice looking... Although eventually I know that the rot will get them... I plan to harvest the seed though and plant them for next season...

Lastly I am sure you are wanting to know who won the giveaway.... I tried to get one of my cats to help with the drawing yet they could not be more interested in such things, so I decided to have my handsome husband help me out.  He was nice enough to lend a hand and pull out a name for me from the all the entries.  I am pleased to say that the winner of my very first giveaway "A Little Tonic Before Bedtime" is  D Suplicki from Whimsical Cottage  .   Shoot me your mailing info and  I will get the package in the mail to you first thing Monday morning... I added lots of extra little goodies so enjoy.  Be sure and also watch for my November giveaway.  I will post all the details on Monday November 2nd.  This one is dear to my heart I am quite excited about it.

Lastly I hope all of you have a wonderful weekend fill with magic and good times.  Thank you for helping make this a very special October for me.... Blessings

March of A Thousand Skeletons

This weekend we went to the 3rd Annual Ghouls Gone Wild parade.  First Halloween parade I had been to.  What caught my attention more than ever was their claim to have the march of the 1000 skeletons.  It was something that I just had to see for myself.   After finding a good parking spot along the route and securing a nice viewing place we waited for it to begin.   During this time we took in the sites as well as the eats and drinks.  We were also entertained by the many who dressed the part , especially the kids...
Finally the parade started.  There were costumes of everything imaginable.  Cars, local music and so much more.  I choose only a few of the phots as there was no way to incorporate all the many sites.  I found that there were several different ways to incorporate a riding lawn mower into a parade.
I would have to say that the most popular costume was the zombie. From Pirate zombies to political zombies to just regular run of the mill zombies.  Yet I will say that some of the zombies played their part extremely well.  So well in fact that I had to wonder a time or two if possibly there really were a few true zombies mixed with all the others... Or possibly just a few who had a little too much of the zombie juice.

As the parade neared its close we eargerly waited for the 1000 skeletons.  Finally in the distance you could see the light of their torches.  Photos just did not do this site justice.  They drew closer and finally they came to our corner.  It was a site I will say that... And we are eagerly waiting for next year so that we can once again go and I think this time participate ourselves...

The Grassy Owl

When my oldest son was small, he would marvel at the large round bails of hay that would line the fields in summer & fall.  He called them "grassy tires".  This term stuck with me and still to this day I call them this.
Recently I spied this creation not far from home and had to share.  Another festive inexpensive way to celebrate the season.

Story for Halloween

October is fast approaching.  Like many I am participating in Mrs. B's 31 days of Halloween as well as Domestic Witch October Blog party.  I have many different things planned through out the month of October, yet one that I would like to give you a taste of early is my on going story.  It is called "The Woodman's Garden".
Especially written with the Halloween spirt as well as others in mind, I hope that this little morsel will bring you back for more.  Be sure and look for the next installment on October 1st.

The Woodman's Garden

Many years had passed since last she had seen the sights that were before her now. Truly she had believed they were a thing of her past. She had left vowing never to come back or even near this vicinity again. Too much pain and terrifying memories had occurred before and finally she had escaped. She was free. Free to be whoever and whatever she wanted to be. She left on that rainy October morning with all she had: herself. And that was really all she needed.

Yet here she was 11 years later. The same thing that had made her leave all those years ago was the same thing that brought her back, death. The first time it was her mother’s passing and this time it was the untimely death of her brother James. They had lost all contact after their mother’s death yet it was as she had wanted it to be, as did he. Although they shared the same mother this was where it ended. They did not have memories of close sibling ties. On the contrary, their relationship memories were often scarce and at times violent.

It was the lawyer who had contacted her to inform her of his fate and well after the funeral. She had not even known of his illness or sudden death until that afternoon when she received the call; the call that informed her that she was the last living heir to the Bayless estate. Although honestly, she never truly felt a true member of the family.

Memories of whispers and talk since she could remember filled her mind. They never really liked her, nor her mother. Yet her mother had choose the “Bayless way” and kept silent of their reasons. When her father, Mr. Bayless, passed her mother became even more distant. It was as if she did not acknowledge her anymore. When her mother passed she wept silently and alone for she knew she would never know all the secrets that she would take with her to her grave.

After her mother’s funeral, her brother continued the same treatment towards her. The will was quickly read and it was James who was placed in control. A meager allowance was given to her yet nothing more. It was as if it was the Bayless way of solidifying their intentions and feelings towards her once and for all. So she left, for there was nothing truly which held her there any longer.

As she met with the lawyer and he began to inform her of all the assets that now rest in her possession, she was astounded to find out the accumulative wealth she had just acquired. She had no idea there was so much. As he spoke of the Bayless manor she laughed. She found it comical that he would call the simple house in which she grew up a manor. He quickly corrected her, informing her that the house which she spoke of no longer existed. It had been torn down and burned shortly after the death of her mother 11 years ago. He spoke of Bayless Manor that lies on the outskirts of town.

It was the home in which her father’s grandparents had lived in the mid 1800’s. Passing it down to her grandfather Floyd and later to her father. A second home, slightly smaller stood adjacent to the main manor. The story was that it housed orphans up until the late 1800’s when it was suddenly shut down. It had long been boarded up and to her knowledge not used for anything but possibly occasional storage since she could remember.

She was given the keys to the manor as well as to any other buildings she could possibly need access to. The home was old and had not been kept up as it needed to be by her late brother James. She was informed of a petition being circulated throughout the town to tear the old home down as well as all buildings on the property. This was part of the reason that she had arrived back in her home town. She had a short period of time to review all she had be given and decide what actions to take in regards to their futures.

As she pulled her car up to the dreary home it loomed over her like her childhood, dark and uninviting.

Around the Corner

Next week at this time we will be starting the month of October.  A favoritie of mine for so many reasons.  It's fall, it's cooler, it's perfect cooking weather, and oh yea.... it's 31 days from Halloween.  I have to be honest that I have never been one of those that goes over the top for Halloween, yet this year I have the bug more than usual.   Already I have all sorts of ideas for goodies to make.  Already I have the bowl of candy for my grandchildren prepared and ready to mail off to Tennessee.  Pumpkins already can be seen abundantly throughout the house.  Who knows maybe I'm changing.  And honestly I am not sure if that would be too bad.  As a child,  my memories of trick or treat were meager.  I owned but one costume, that of a witch (how fitting).  I wore it every year until it was too small and I claimed I was no longer interested in  getting candy.. Yea right.... I am not sure if I will ever get tired of candy... even now... Oh yea already I have my bowls of treats out... My favorities... those fat chewy tootsie rolls.  Not the little midgets... the others that let you taste just how yummy a tootsie roll really is... Maybe Im making up for lost time... :-)    who knows...
