Listen

There is a privacy about winter
which no other season gives you....
 In spring, summer and fall
people sort of have an open season on each other;
only in the winter, in the country, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself.
 ~Ruth Stout

I know that so many have had more than enough of old man winter and his crazy ways.  The snow falls this season seem to be one for the record books in so many cases.  However I have found that such times offer a wonderful time for quiet and peace.  A time to reflect on the ending of the cold and the warmth that is soon to come with the approaching spring.

Soon the warmer days will come and the small buds of green will peek through mother earth to emerge once again for yet another turn of the yearly wheel.  We will soon forget the woe and grumbling we had in regards to the snow and all its bother.

Days will become longer and we will seek to find things to do to fill up the time with activity.  We will no longer have enough time to silently sit and wonder about the questions and thoughts that circle our minds.  We will be far too busy with the things that warmer weather and sunshine bring to us.

In the last few weeks of winter... take a few moments to enjoy the silence it brings.  Take a few moments to think what it may be that he is trying to tell you as he covers the earth with his fluffy white blanket.  There are so many times that nature tries diligently to tell us things, yet too often we do not listen.  Even when we are put in a place where there is silence and no other activity can be done, we still do not open our ears to hear what may be being whispered to us ever so softly.

Lovely post, and you are so, so right. I love the snow and the peace that it brings as well, but, I what I don't like is the ice that follows. It can get very treacherous here in the city...not to mention very, very messy. Going to work can be a frightening experience.

So very true about Nature talking to us, and us not listening. It is almost a lost art now, to listen to nature, but there are still those of us who want to hear what Nature needs us to know. Lovely post! Thank you. Robin.

We missed the snow you guys got yesterday and today. It went south of us.
The only whisper I hear is coming from the 'blue lady' in our garage, saying "come on old man lets ride". X.

What beautiful thoughts, Janie. It is so true. There is nothing quite like an evening walk when the light of day is turning off her lights and the snow is falling lightly over a white blanket already on the ground. The peace and silence allows for time to ponder on many things.
I love Winter ~ always have. If nothing else, it gives us a stronger appreciation for Spring, Summer, and Fall.
Thank you for a beautiful post ~ beautiful words and beautiful photos.

What a beautiful, introspective post. While I am craving the sight of crocuses in my yard - I do love the quiet magic of fresh snow falling from the sky. It is a serene moment when you awake and look outside - and all is still and blanketed in white. Theresa

I love the message that comes from your heart's song Janie...

I love the introspective time of winter...a time for looking within and not engaging in the outer trappings of the world.

Thank You for bringing these quiet and reflective thoughts to us!

Stay Safe and Warm where you are!

I love that your posts are always so positive. You inspire this Scorpio to be an eagle instead of a lizard.

I believe at each change of seasons wonderful things happen in Nature outside and also within your own world like you mention as in the light in the day where the balance of creating your own light versus receiving it from the Sun changes which as you say also change habits.

Within nature one just can do so wonderful things to our self awareness and simply said "things which provide you ways to feel happy inside" and get adrenaline just by taking some time to look around you.

One can see so much which will fill your heart and the way you take every day just by looking at it and value it.

So many of us realizing the comfort of silence! I love your Kaleidoscope snow picture! Hmmm; could you image looking up and seeing it. With just enough.. meditation. I have been wondering about the bluebird. I have kept positive thoughts. How the animals in need find you is much like my place. Blackie's post is when I found your blog. I have almost the exact same story. Except, I named my Blacke, Masai (to give him powers of strenght and to be a strong runner!). Oops, looks like Florida needs some snow to keep ME silent. Peace. Beautiful! Its amazing how each season has its own qualities. But sadly winter is often viewed negatively due to the bleakness and frosty cold. Such a shame! Thank you so much for the reminder of its uniqueness: for acknowledging our need to reflect in quietness and solitude that the wintry months often necessitate.
