Smile.... It Always Works and Its Always a Blessing

I am a sucker for any book store... I admit it.  It is difficult for me to go into one and not walk out with some form of reading material.  Barnes & Noble is even worse because most of them now have a starbucks smack dab in the middle of the store.  Thus I have 2 vices that I have to try and overcome and needless to say I am not good at either...

Yet yesterday while out and around I stopped by the local Barnes & Noble as I wanted to pick up a couple magazines I have been looking for.  I was saddened to learn that the Rolling Stone issue I was wanting was out of date and I had missed it.  However I was thrilled to find the issue of Q (A British music magazine) I had been wanting and thought I had missed with a great article on Matthew Bellamy - lead guitarist and singer for Muse.  Now some of you may be saying Muse?  Well lets just say that if you have a chance check them out.... They are truly the next big thing from that wonderful country across the pond.  (hint:  I am somewhat of a fan)

Although finding the magazine was a great thing, I found something else even better.  I always stop by the small section of New Age, Mystical, whatever they call it area and see if any new books have arrived.  I really should not do this as I always seem to find one that I must have.  I had to laugh as "The Men Who Stare at Goats" (a book about psychic spys & another great George Clooney movie) and "Goddess of the Market-Ann Rand and the American Right were both in this section.  I mean I can sort of see why the first was there, but was unsure why the latter was.  I mean I know she was an antheist but really. That was the only thing that I could think tied it in with New Age and such... Anyhow about my find...

While looking over the few titles they had, which really seems to keep getting smaller each time I go in there... I found a book that caught my attention.  I am sure many of you have already seen this book, read it, whatever, but to me it was a little nugget of gold I found in the bottom corner of the shelf.  I know it is not the best way to purchase books but many times I rely on my intuition to lead me to what I need and it was right on yesterday.

It was the cover that caught my eye first, a tranquil slate blue with greenery and a crescent moon in the upper right corner.  Then the title "HedgeWitch" by Silver Ravenwolf.  Something just told me that I had to get it.... And so I did... Last night as I begun to read it (after I read the article on Muse ), I could hardly believe it... It was like it was speaking to me about all the things I have been mulling around in my mind and heart the last few days....

Three treasures in one afternoon.... Hard to believe... Muse, a new book, and oh yea a nice hot vanilla latte with a dash of cinnamon.  I could not do anything but smile big and think to myself before I fell asleep.... it always works.... and its always a blessing.

Silver Ravenwolf wrote a book someone found useful? What? When did this happen?!

"Hedge Witch" is a good book. Enjoy it!

I miss having a big book store with a "New Age" section. They cram our books into the "miscellaneous" section at the Base Exchange. LOL

We aren't a religion. We're miscellaneous. ;)

Bookstores are like magnets aren't they? My heart races a little every time I step through the doorway. SO many delights are standing on the shelves, just waiting for you to discover them, and call them your own!

I'm sorry that you didn't get your magazine issue. Perhaps you can check their website for past issues, or check on ebay.

But I'm happy that you found your other publication, and your book!! It is a wonderful read!!

And the vanilla latte? What can I say, but that I'm glad you remembered the cinnamon! Perfection!! lol

Sounds like a wonderful trip to the bookstore!

Hugs,
Suzie

I have to agree with Sydnii on that one lol..

I adore bookstores, especially B&N because of the Starbucks, and my husband is well aware of that and tries to keep me out of them or I will spend every dollar we have on books LOL...

My house is covered with them, and we exchange books at our local flea market and with my parents as well, so we are always getting new stuff in.

Luckily for me our B&N still has a pretty decent sized New Age section, and that is not including the books that really do not go there lol...

I am glad you got a few treasures! It is always nice to sit back and read while sipping something delish!!

My weakness is a white chocolate mocha frap...dbl blended ;)

Ok I will admit that I am not overly knowledgeable about authors etc... and well yea.. after getting into the book more this eve it does seem somewhat 12 stepish... it still has many good points in it. So I feel I am missing a point here. Is there a reason for the giggles about Silver Ravenwolf that I am missing... Please help a newbie out.... especially if there is good counsel to be given.... :-)

As I always understood, Madame Ravenwolf is kind of the laughing stock of Wicca. To put it nicely. Many of the claims she makes in her books are so incorrect they border on ludicrous, and she spreads quite a bit of misinformation and wrong information.

Though now I'm rather curious to see this book myself, even if I'm not Wiccan. -plots a trip down to Powells-

If you ever make it out to Portland, OR, make sure you go to Powells. Four stories and a whole city block, with a Witchcraft/New Age section that is almost 4 rows... front and back, tall shelves, too. Hehe. <3

I am lucky to have a very active Bookstore just 3 minutes away from my home. The moment I walk in I get a feeling of being right where I want to be.

They have this table where they stall their latests books and even outside they have a stall with postcards which even are so special. It are cards you can send to a friend and which has an old fashioned picture of people, often kids, black and white coloured, ok, not coloured maybe is better, but they have quotes on it which are so special.

Inside they have a certain peace which is like a library. I should go there again sometime.

Q magazine is great, I have seen the most amazing stories in it. There is a bookstore at a train station not far from where I live where they have a great volume of international magazines.

You gave me some reading messages Janie with this blog, I wanna pick up a book again, it is grey and raining and a good day for it.

I like the books, I feel you read, and take what you want from the book, it's not like a bible where you've got to believe it all!!! That's why it fun to go looking, and reading, and just having fun!-

I may have to pick this one up! I hear snide remarks about Silver Ravenwolf as well.

I agree with what Judith says, take what you want/need/feel from a book. I just have a hard time believing the entire substance of anyone book can be incorrect.

I am pursuing a part time Christmas job at BnB. I think I have more books than any other one possession.

Most of the disdain towards Silver RavenWolf stems from her book "Teen Witch". Although it was a bit on the "fluffy bunny" side and catered more towards the younger generation that was coming out at the time of the book, it was still a good book for young kids new to the craft.

I, for one, am a HUGE fan of Silver RavenWolf and will always read her books. I think I have all of them except for the one you mentioned (another bookstore trip for me!).

I do not use any books as a "one and only way", but her books are still very good and accurate. In my opinion she is of the same caliber as Gerina Dunwich, Patricia Telesco and Kristin Madden. All very popular authors and very good at what they do.

Judith Kim & Christine, thank you so much for your input... I could not agree with you more... It is hard to say one book has ALL the answers... there are hidden gems everywhere

I've read some Silver Ravenwolf...I don't mind her in the least.

I think we can all take what we need from a book and leave the other stuff right where we found it. :)

Glad you found so many treasures in one day. Truly a blessed day, indeed.

I'm telling you, it's all about the small things, isn't it?

I am new to this world of Pagan literature so I may be biased but, I like this new book as well. As a "newbie" it really speaks to me and gives me a simple perspective on complicated rituals and workings. I like the tone in which it is written and love the cover art (although it continues throughout the entire book). I agree, I judge books by how I feel about them. Sometimes I am dead-on and sometimes I am quite wrong. This book just looked perfect for me, so I borrowed it from the library. (I would have bought it if I had money)

I say "Yay!" to you for finding a book that makes sense to you!
